On March 16, the 6th International Class officially opened at SMU. The International Class offers three programs to the oversea exchange students, namely Navigation Technologies, International Shipping Management and Marine Engineering. This year, it attracts 41 international students from 7 countries such as the United States, Poland, Ukraine, South Korea, Denmark, Egypt, and Indonesia. It is the first time that students from Egypt and Indonesia participate the programs. Prof. Jin Yongxing, Chairman of SMU University Council, heads from International Education College and International Office and teachers from Merchant Marine College and College of Transport &Communications attended the opening ceremony.
Prof. Jin Yongxing delivered a speech and extended a warm welcome to the international students. He said “From the Exchange Project between SMU and MMA in 2010 to now, International Class has become a program among maritime universities from various countries. It was also approved by China Scholarship Council and founded by Chinese Government Scholarship.The International students can not only acquire professional knowledge and skills but also experience the charm of Chinese culture.” He also encouraged students to study hard and strengthen mutual communication so as to become academic-exchange and cultural-exchange envoys between SMU and others universities.
Associate Prof. Chen Yuli from Merchant Marine College as a representative teacher and Adam Szloch from Massachusetts Maritime Academy as an international student gave speeches respectively.
At that night, international students and SMU’s students had good interactions in the welcome activities.
Due to the numerous students and countries of this international classes, International Education College organized pre-school education activities twice in order to help international students be familiar with SMU well and invited teachers from Security and Safeguard Department to explain safety knowledge and teachers from Library to introduce how to access the library resources and so forth.
