Maritime English Model Course Revision by SMU Approved by HTW 2

From February 2 through 6, HTW 2 (The 2nd session of the IMO Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping) was held in London by IMO (International Maritime Organization). Representatives from over 150 countries and international organizations attended the meeting. Associate Prof. Chen Yuli, Ms. Xie Jieying and Mr. Zhou Feng from Merchant Marine College, SMU, Prof. Cai Yongliang and Prof. Zhang Yan from College of Foreign Languages, SMU, Associate Prof. Clive Cole from World Maritime University, Ms. Catherine Logie, responsible person of Marlins (leading brand in training solutions for the shipping industry) also attended the meeting on behalf of IMLA (International Maritime Lecturers Association).

The draft of Maritime English Model Course mainly revised by SMU was reviewed in the meeting. Representatives from other countries reviewed the draft and proposed comments and suggestions. The draft of Model Course won unanimous approval in the meeting.

The revised Maritime English Model Course will be published officially by IMO this year as an important reference for the teaching of maritime English for global seafarers. The approval of Model Course revision makes SMU the first Chinese maritime university responsible for revising IMO’s Model Course.

The Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping of IMO, formerly known as STW, is an international professional institution in researching and formulating seafarers management rules and seafarers competency standards on basis of international seafarers training, certification and watchkeeping standard convention. It’s the most authoritative and influential professional committee in this field.
