On the afternoon of December 3, the final contest of the 1st Spoken English Competition (SEC 2014) was held at Hall of COSCO Library. Mr. Yang Wanfeng, Vice President of SMU, relevant heads from Academic Affairs Division and Colleges attended the competition.
Prof. Cai Yongliang, Prof. Shang Xin and Prof. Zhang Yan from College of Foreign Languages, Andrew and Ben from EF, were invited as judges. The competition was composed of two parts: Classic Shots and Scenario Simulation.
In the first part, competitors reproduced classical movie clips and play clips such as Fast & Furious, Pride and Prejudice, the Big Bang Theory, the Merchant of Venice, Cat, and Brave Heart. They interpreted the cultural connotation well with vivid performance and good spoken English.
In the second part, competitors showed their competence in English as well as their concern and thoughts for the society and personal growth by talking about various topics such as interpersonal relationships, career planning, domestic and international situations, etc.
After three hours of fierce competition, the Vikings and Team Z from College of Transport & Communications tied for first place. Study Monster Union from College of Ocean Environment & Engineering ranked the second place. BD from College of Ocean Environment & Engineering, Bigger from Logistics Engineering College and Horizon from School of Economics & Management won the third prize. 10 competitors won the title of "Top Ten of the Spoken Language Competition”. Mr. Yang Wanfeng and other guests granted awards to the winners.
Launched in mid October, the competition was hosted by Academic Affairs Division and undertaken by College of Foreign Languages. After preliminary selection and preliminary contest, 10 teams were eventually elected as the top ten to attend the final contest.
