Comment of IMLA Representative from SMU Attracted Discussion and Support in IMO MSC93 Conference

On May 23, IMLA (International Maritime Lecturers Association) representative, Associate Prof. Chen Yuli from Merchant Marine College of SMU, commented in IMO (International Maritime Organization) MSC93 conference and his suggestions were adopted by the conference.

Associate Prof. Chen Yuli gave a professional comment on the proposal of “Building Ship Collision Avoidance Model Course”, attracting heated discussion and wining the support and praise from the United States, Norway, the Netherlands, China and other 5 member countries. SMU teacher’s participation and performance in this international maritime conference fully demonstrated SMU’s capability to participate in IMO decision-making events and SMU’s competitiveness in global maritime education.

IMO MSC conference is the main decision-making body of IMO. 500 representatives from member countries and international organizations attended this IMO MSC93 Conference. The conference examined 22 issues, including “Passenger Ship Safety“ and “Enhancing Ship Security Measures”, and adopted 21 decisions and 26 circulars, including “Code of Safety for Ships Operating in Oolar Waters” and China’s“Performance Standards for the Shipborne ‘Beidou’ Satellite Navigation System Receiver Equipment”.

IMLA representatives, Prof. Jin Yongxing, Chairman of IMLA and Vice President of SMU, Associate Prof. Clive Cole from World Maritime University, Captain Fred Anstey from Marine Institute, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, Ms. Catherine Logie, head of Marlins (leading brand in training solutions for the shipping industry) and Associate Prof. Chen Yuli from SMU attended the conference.
