African Class of the 2nd Joint B.Sc. Program in Logistics Management Completed Navigation Practice

On April 29, 33 students in the African Class of the 2nd Joint B.Sc. Program in Logistics Management from Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Cameroon, Congo, Cote d'Ivoire and Benin completed their navigation practice on “Yufeng” ship, disembarking at Nanjing port and returning to SMU.

The foreign students embarked on “Yufeng” ship at Zhangjiagang, and then called at Zhangjiagang, Busan, Kwangyang, and Nanjing Port. During the practice, while fulfilling the practice tasks, the foreign students also participated in various activities such as emergency survival and fire drill, navigating the 10,000-ton ship and learning turbine technology in smaller groups, learning seamanship, making Chinese traditional food, etc., from which they experienced the life on board, and acquired knowledge of ship navigation skill and the ports that they had visited, which helped enrich their study and encouraged them to learn more during their education at SMU.

Constructed in 1992, “Yufeng” ship is a 10, 000-ton container ship of SMU for teaching and training, which could receive 90 students for training tasks. It now runs shipping course from China to South Korea.

The B.Sc. Program in Logistics Management jointly launched by SMU and Regional Maritime University is the first joint education program operated by local universities and colleges of Shanghai. Up to now it has enrolled students for 4 years, and the 33 students participating in this navigation practice arrived in Shanghai, commencing their third year study in September 2013.
