On April 28 and 29, invited by Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO), Prof. Yu Shicheng, Chairman of SMU University Council, attended its annual conference“Outlook for Shipping in 2014”held in Dubai. Representatives from more than 250 BIMCO member institutes attended the conference.
In the conference, the representatives reviewed the shipping market and looked into its future, and had a heated discussion about issues like repeated charge in marine accidents, the influence of the upcoming law on shipping industry and ISO28007, and they also discussed some current hotspot issues such as ocean environment protection.
During the conference, Prof. Yu Shicheng had talks with Mr. John Denholm, President of BIMCO, and Mr. Angus R. Frew, Secretary-general of BIMCO. Prof. Yu briefed on the latest development of Shanghai International Shipping Center and China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, while Mr. John Denholm expressed his gratitude to SMU for its strong support for BIMCO Shanghai Center. They widely exchanged opinions on issues including the development trend of international shipping market, maritime safety, maritime talent cultivation, maritime education and the development of international maritime rules, and further discussed the possibility of strengthening cooperation.
On the afternoon of April 30, Prof. Yu paid a visit to COSCO West Asia FZE, and had a conversation with SMU alumni from the company. Mr. Zhou Liliang, General Manager of COSCO West Asia FZE, introduced the company’s latest achievements in container and bulk transportation, and expressed thanks to SMU’s support in providing outstanding talents. Prof. Yu briefed on the development of SMU, encouraging alumni to make contributions to the growth of COSCO West Asia FZE. He also noted that SMU was sincerely delighted with alumni’s every bit of progress.
