In the evening of August 19, Shanghai Maritime University Alumni Symposium in Indonesia was held in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia, Mr. Liu Jianchao and Chairman of University Council of SMU, Prof. Yu Shicheng were invited to attend. The symposium was hosted by Mr. Shi Pengfei, managing director of Cosco’s joint venture in Indonesia—Ocean Global Shipping (OGS), and nearly 20 SMU alumnus working in Indonesia were present.
Mr. Liu Jianchao first delivered a speech. He thanked SMU for cultivating so many advanced professional maritime talents and spoke highly of their love towards motherland, their passion for ocean, their determination in political quality as well as their excellent professional ability. It is particularly worth mentioning here that at present in Chinese Embassy in Indonesia alone, there were 3 young SMU alumnus. Living far from relatives and friends, they struggled hard in the front-line of diplomacy、business and culture exchange without considering their own benefits that contributed to country strong and prosperous and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Mr. Liu stressed that the development and growth of shipping industry﹑the proposition and maintenance of sea power as well as the exploration and utilization of ocean resources were critical to implementing national marine strategy, which was linked closely with high-quality maritime talents. As an influential high education institution both in China and abroad, SMU would surely do well in the fields of personnel training, scientific research and serving the society.
Prof. Yu Shicheng expressed his gratitude to Mr. Liu Jianchao’s high praise for SMU and SMU alumnus and appreciated alumnus’ meticulous arrangement. He said that SMU was responsible for developing high-quality maritime talents and pushing forward national marine strategy. Then he introduced the latest advances of SMU in teaching and scientific research, especially the breakthrough in Internationalization program, looking into a better blueprint for next step. At last, Prof. Yu not only warmly invited Mr. Liu Jianchao to SMU for guiding work in his convenience, but welcomed SMU alumni to come back for visit.
During the symposium, SMU alumnus made their respective speeches, expressing their profound relationships with SMU. They also sincerely wish their alma mater to make greater contributions on realizing ocean strategy and building maritime power.
