On April 16, 36 African students of SMU Logistics Management Program from Ghana, Cameroon, Gambia, Liberia, and Sierra Leone succeeded in completing their navigation practice on “Yufeng” ship, disembarking from the ship and returning to SMU.
On April 11, the foreign students embarked on “Yufeng” ship at Zhangjiagang, then visited Zhangjiagang, Busan, Kwangyang, and Nanjing Port successively. During the practice, while fulfilling the teaching tasks, the foreign students also participated in various activities, such as organizing the lifesaving fire drill, observing and learning to drive the 10,000-tonne ship and turbine technology in groups or classes, learning sailor’s craft, having experience of making Chinese traditional food, and knowing local customs and scenes of South Korea. They experienced the life on board directly, acquired knowledge of ship navigation skill and became familiar with the ports that they had visited which helped enrich their study life and encouraged them to complete education at SMU.
“Yufeng” ship, constructed in 1992, is a 10-thousand-ton container ship for teaching and internship training of SMU, which could hold 90 students for finishing their teaching internship tasks. It now runs shipping course from China to South Korea.
The Bachelor’s Degree of Logistics Management Program, launched by SMU and Regional Maritime University is the first joint education program in the local universities and colleges of Shanghai. Up to now it has enrolled students 3 times, and the first 36 students reached Shanghai, beginning their third year’s study in October 2012.
